Purchase and Platform: Is there a mobile/console version? Free? On Game Pass?
Is there a mobile or console version? As of June 2026, None. MECCHA CHAMELEON is currently exclusive to PC/Steam and only supports Windows 10 64-bit. There is no native Mac or Linux/SteamOS version. There are no versions for PS5, Xbox, Switch (including Switch 2), iOS, and Android, and the official has not announced any porting plans. The media occasionally talks about "whether the console version will come", but that is all speculation. A simple criterion: any official news about a new platform will first appear on its Steam store page, which currently only has an icon for Windows.
Is it free? In Xbox/PC Game Pass? Neither. It is a one-time purchase paid game. It is not in the Game Pass catalog, and there is no official free version or web version. Those sites on the Internet that claim to be "free online play", "play directly on the web", and "no installation and cracking" are not official channels, so it is recommended to avoid them directly.
How much does it cost? The basic price is about Japanese yen ¥790 / about $5.99 (30 yuan or more). During the first launch period, there is an "introductory" promotion with a discount of approximately 20% (approximately $4.79 / ¥632). According to media reports, this first launch discount will end approximately within a week of release. Whether the price will increase after that will be determined by the actual Steam page. To confirm real-time prices, discounts and minimum configurations, you can check the Configuration and Price Page of this site, or directly open the official Steam store page.
Gameplay and modes: Can it be played solo/with bots/offline? How long is an inning?
Can I play alone, against computer bots, or offline? No. This is a purely online multiplayer game, with no single-player campaign, no AI bots, and no offline mode. You have to be online and have a real person in the room to start. Some reviews listed "lack of single-player content" as one of its main shortcomings. Its online connection does not rely on an official dedicated matching server. Instead, a player builds and hosts a room by himself, and others join in.
What are the modes? There are currently three types (the official Japanese name in parentheses, the English name is mostly a common translation by the media and the community):
- Normal / Normal: A classic one-man game, where one hunter must find all the hiders within a time limit.
- 嗗え鬼/Infection: People who are caught will turn into ghosts, and the number of ghosts will increase, closing the net like a snowball.
- ダブル / Double (Double): Everyone hides first, and then all become ghosts to see who can find everyone else the fastest.
The homeowner selects the map and mode in the lobby. If you want to take a closer look at the turn rhythm of each mode, you can read the Gameplay System Page.
How long is a round? It is turn-based: the process is from the hiding party's preparation phase (moving, selecting points, painting, posing) to the search party's release and starting to capture, to the countdown reaching zero or everyone being captured and the end of the game, to the settlement screen revealing everyone's hiding location (this section is recognized as the funniest part of every game). The exact number of minutes, preparation and search seconds for each round has not been officially announced yet, and will fluctuate depending on the mode and host settings. According to the usual experience of games such as Hide and Seek/Prop Hunt, a single game is usually fast-paced and lasts for several minutes, which is suitable for playing one game after another.
Online with friends: Who has the most fun? How to play with friends? Is it cross-platform?
How many people can play best? There is a discrepancy that needs to be explained truthfully: both the official Steam page and Famitsu say Recommended for 2 to 10 people, but according to AUTOMATON's initial report, it says "Recommended for 2 to 14, up to 24", and the English Wiki also writes "2 to 12". The actual hard upper limit for the number of users has not been officially announced. It depends largely on the host's network bandwidth (because it is hosted by the host). Based on community consensus, 4 to 8 people are the most balanced: 2 to 4 people are suitable for ordinary single ghost games, and infection mode with 6 to 10 people is more exciting, chaotic and fun.
How to play with friends? The standard process is: one person builds a house, sets the room as private (if not private, anyone can join freely), selects the map, mode, and number of people, then shares the room with the team, and everyone can join. A few points to note:
- Everyone must purchase one copy separately, and the game version must be the same. The number one reason why "the room cannot be searched" is that the version is inconsistent, because the developers are very diligent in updating and patching it almost every day.
- According to the patch record, v1.2.1 (June 14) has added the friend invitation function; earlier versions did not have one-click invitation. According to community players, at that time, they had to rely on "region + room name + password + tag" to manually search and join (this part is the community's statement, and the official did not elaborate).
For more complete house building, private room, and invitation steps, see the Online and Multiplayer Page.
Does cross-platform connection support? There is no cross-platform, and the reason is simple: it only has one platform: PC/Steam, everyone runs the same Windows version, and there is no "second platform" to cross. By the way, it is designed to be very suitable for live broadcasts with viewers. Officials clearly stated that anchors can easily open "audience participation" rooms, which is also a major reason for its viral popularity.
Technology and experience: Will I get dizzy in 3D? How to increase frame rate? Can I play it on Steam Deck?
Will you get dizzy after playing 3D? How to relieve it? Motion sickness is indeed a recurring complaint, especially from the perspective of the search party (first person pan). The good news is that developers have applied patches many times to mitigate the problem: According to patch records, v1.1.0 adjusted the hunter's field of view FOV from 90 to 100 and brightened the shadows, and v1.2.2 further optimized the hunter's motion sickness. Even so, some players still reported discomfort. According to the experience of community players, common mitigation methods include: turning off motion blur, lowering the lens sensitivity, and taking a break after playing for a while. Players who are more sensitive to motion sickness are recommended to try the short-game, low-intensity mode first.
How to increase the frame rate/make the picture smoother? According to repeated mentions from the community and many guides, the biggest culprit of frame drops is "Neon Effects" (luminous effects plus the effect of paint exploding). Turning it down can significantly improve the smoothness. Other actionable optimizations:
- Turn off Motion Blur.
- N If the card is stuck in the driver, set the game to "Highest performance first".
- Limit the number of frames to slightly lower than the monitor refresh rate to reduce frame time fluctuations.
- Low-end graphics players can turn off post-processing to reduce crashes when entering the lobby.
There is another point that is easily misunderstood: because it is Host Hosted, some lags actually come from the host's network, not your own computer. The complete optimization list and minimum configuration are on the config page.
Can I play with a Steam Deck or controller? The controller can be used to operate the menu and the hunting stage, but it will be awkward to use the joystick for fine painting. It is recommended to use a mouse (the touchpad can be mapped to mouse-style input on the Deck). It can be run on Steam Deck through Proton, but as of June 2026, there is no official Deck Verified certification. Please expect the experience to be "playable but not officially certified".
Is it worth buying? Can I get a refund? What are the disadvantages?
Is it worth buying? In terms of cost performance, it is generally considered to be a good value. According to the developer's announcement and multiple media reports: the price is only 5 to 6 US dollars, and more than 2 million copies were sold within 5 days of release. The highest number of people online at the same time in history is more than 130,000 people. The Steam evaluation is "special praise / rave reviews". If you have a few friends who can play black games together, or you like to watch live broadcasts and participate in audience games, the return on happiness is very high compared to this price. Of course, whether it's "worth it" also depends on whether you can get a group of people to play it together, since it has no single-player content.
What are the known disadvantages? It’s best to know before buying:
- There is no single-player mode, it must be connected to the Internet and there must be a real person.
- There are few official maps (currently 5, see map page).
- According to review feedback, the UI is rough, the straw of the coloring tool is sometimes "weird", and occasionally encounters connection problems.
- Some players will be dizzy from 3D.
Can I get a refund? This game does not have an exclusive refund policy and follows the general rules of Steam: Generally speaking, you can apply for a refund on Steam within 14 days of purchase and if the play time is less than 2 hours. The specifics are subject to Steam's refund terms at the time of purchase. Considering that its unit price is very low, most people rarely return it even if they don’t like it.
Chinese and Updates: Is there Simplified Chinese? Will you continue to update and add maps? Is there a creative workshop?
Does Simplified Chinese support? Support. MECCHA CHAMELEON's Steam store page is marked with interfaces and subtitles in 12 languages, which includes Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, as well as English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, Portuguese (Brazil), Arabic, etc. In other words, both the menu and the coloring interface can understand Chinese, and there is no language barrier. One thing to note: the store metadata marks these languages as "Full Audio", but according to feedback from community players, the game itself has almost no voice dialogue and is mainly text-based, so "Full Audio" is probably just Steam's default check option. The official has not specifically stated this. Don't expect Chinese dubbing just because of this mark.
The name is in English, will it affect Chinese players? No. As mentioned before, the official title in each language area (including Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese) always retains the English MECCHA CHAMELEON, and no official Chinese name is registered. "MECCHA CHAMELEON" is a temporary translation by the community and media. However, the game has a complete Simplified Chinese interface, so even if the title is in English, the actual game is still very friendly to Chinese players.
Will it continue to be updated? Will new content be added in the future? The post-launch pace is very positive. The developer is LEMORION, a Japanese independent lone wolf author. According to multiple media reports, he pushes patches almost every day. In the first few days of release, he intensively repaired problems such as wall freezes, crashes, and motion sickness. In v1.2.0, a fifth map "Penguin Hotel" and new systems such as sight-scoring rankings were added. He also previewed subsequent new maps at the 2 million sales milestone. In other words, this is a game that is still undergoing frequent iterations, and you will most likely get a lot of free updates after buying it. See the map page for a list of maps.
Is there a creative workshop and can I play with homemade maps? This should be explained clearly in two levels. First, the developer does come with a set of mapping (MOD) tools. The first release is here, and v1.2.0 also achieves "mods can be accessed without rebuilding the room", so the playable maps will exceed the official ones. Secondly, some guide sites on the Internet claim that it "supports the Steam Creative Workshop/Official MOD Store", but this cannot be found on the official Steam page or patch notes. It is a unilateral statement by the community and has not been officially confirmed. It is recommended not to treat it as a confirmed feature.
Names and Trivia: How to pronounce the name? Why is it always spelled Mecha? What's up with Steam's sexual content tag?
How to pronounce the name? Why is it always misspelled? The correct spelling is Meccha (two cs), which comes from the Japanese Kansai dialect "めっちゃ", which means "super, very", so it is written in all capitals MECCHA CHAMELEON, and the literal translation is close to "MECCHA CHAMELEON". It is not Mecha (mecha), but because there is only one letter c missing, too many people (even some English media titles) will misspell it as Mecha Chameleon, making people mistakenly think that it is related to "mecha/mecha", but in fact it has nothing to do with it. The "Mecca Chameleon", "Mekka Chameleon", "Mecha Chameleon PS5", etc. you see in the search all refer to the same game. The original Japanese name is めっちゃカメレオン, and the Chinese community commonly calls it MECCHA CHAMELEON. Its nicknames include "Graffiti Hide and Seek" and "Painting Hide and Seek". To learn more about the developer and the background of this indie game, check out the About page.
Why are community translations so confusing? Because the official titles in each language area of Steam (Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, etc.) always retain the English MECCHA CHAMELEON, and no official Chinese title has ever been registered. Therefore, "MECCHA CHAMELEON" and "MECCHA CHAMELEON (Traditional)" are all temporary translations from the community and the media. Taiwanese media will even directly mark them as "tentative translation". This is why you will see different names on different sites.
What's up with the "Sexual Content" tag on Steam? This is a doubtful point that has not yet been determined: some players have noticed that Steam seems to have labeled this game as "sexual content", but its specific reference is not clear. Whether it is related to the gameplay or an error in the platform label, the official has not made it clear. The core gameplay of this game is to color the chameleon's body and hide in disguise. It does not display explicit content. Before an official explanation is given, it is recommended to treat this label as "meaning to be verified" and do not draw conclusions about the content based on it.
