Map overview: There are currently 5 official scenes

In "MECCHA CHAMELEON", each game of hide-and-seek takes place on a fixed map. Before the start of each game, the homeowner who builds the house selects the map and mode in the lobby. After other players join, they hide or hunt in the selected scene. For the specific house building process, see the Online and Multiplayer page. As of June 2026, there are 5 official MECCHA CHAMELEON maps: the first 4 (Hide and Seek Mansion, Indoor Village, Sewer, Back Room), and the 5th Penguin Hotel added in v1.2.0 on June 13, 2026.

Here’s a reminder of an easy pitfall: The Steam store page itself does not list any map names. The Chinese names used below are all translated from English, and the English names are translated from reports by Destructoid, TheGamer and other media, and are not official names from the developers. Therefore, terms such as "Hide and Seek Mansion" and "Indoor Countryside" can be understood as "general terms for the community and media". The official only uses the English title MECCHA CHAMELEON.

Here’s a quick checklist to help you create an impression quickly. It should be emphasized that the "number of hidden points" in the table is an approximate number calculated by the media and community players. The official number of hidden points for each map has not been announced yet. It is for reference only and should not be regarded as accurate data.

Important bug correction: the kitchen, gallery, and party room are not independent maps

Many early guides and short videos will also list "Kitchen", "Art Gallery" and "Party Room" as separate levels. This is actually mistaking the rooms and props in the trailer for maps. Based on various information, it can be determined that these things are all internal elements of the Hide and Seek Mansion and are not new scenes.

  • Kitchen: It is a room (with cabinets and shelves) in the Hide and Seek Mansion, not a separate map.
  • Art Gallery/Picture Frame: The paintings and picture frames on the wall are props in the mansion. Players can paint their body into a canvas and stick it on the wall to pretend to be a painting.
  • Party Room/Balloon Decoration: Party elements such as balloons and ribbons are props imitated by players and are not a "party" themed map. PC Gamer's reviewer disguised himself as a balloon.

So the real official number of maps is 5, not the seven or eight listed by some sites. When you see terms like "kitchen map" and "gallery map", you basically break down the rooms in the mansion and count them repeatedly.

Hide and Seek Mansion: Newbie-friendly map with the most hiding spots

Hide-and-Seek Mansion is currently the largest and most suitable map for novices. It is also the scene that most people will encounter when playing "MECCHA CHAMELEON" for the first time. According to media reports such as TheGamer, it has the largest number of hiding spots among the five pictures (about 11 according to the community count). It has many rooms and complex layouts, and is very tolerant of hiding parties. Therefore, newcomers who want to familiarize themselves with the rhythm of coloring and posing first choose this picture as the most suitable.

The mansion is a classic European-style multi-room structure. Frequently mentioned areas and props include:

  • Library: rows of bookshelves into which color blocks painted like the spines of the books can be inserted.
  • Tile bathroom: The walls and floor are regular tiles. It is suitable to use a straw to take two tile colors and apply them alternately on the limbs to create a "tile" effect.
  • Kitchen: Cabinets and shelves, with many objects and visual clutter, are a good hiding room.
  • Hall: A tall space with stone columns and ceiling beams, as well as horse statues, red armchairs, and rows of paintings in the corridor.

In terms of coloring ideas, the colors of the wood, stone and fabric surfaces of luxury homes are warmer and darker. Don’t use pure bright colors for flat painting. Take the main color first and then layer a deeper shadow color. After layering, it will look more natural from multiple angles. Red armchairs, horse statues, and hanging paintings are all classic camouflage targets. For specific color selection and posing techniques, please refer to Hiding and Camouflage Techniques.

Indoor countryside: a world of farm props and big color blocks

Indoor Country is an indoor map of a rural farm with warm colors. The atmosphere is simpler and more lifelike than a mansion. According to media and community descriptions, there are about 6 hiding spots here, which are of medium difficulty. Its biggest feature is that the props are large and colorful, and rewards large areas of color block camouflage rather than detailed description, so even if your coloring skills are average, you can get away with "painting a large piece of the body into a farm object".

Common farm props and surfaces include:

  • Green crates: square and uniform in color, especially suitable for squatting into a square shape and then painting the whole green.
  • Barn hay: Piles of hay, large tawny pieces, loose in outline, requiring little posture.
  • Barn wood grain wall : The wood board has a horizontal grain, and when painting, add a few dark lines along the wood grain to look more like it.
  • Cardboard stand: A flat prop that can be used with the "flatten against the wall" posture to pretend to be the stand.

Because the objects here are mostly large pieces of solid color or simple textures, the key point of color matching is to cover the main color first, and then add a layer of shadow to separate the light-receiving surface and the back-lit surface to prevent the entire body from appearing to be a flat color. After the novice has mastered the mansion, the indoor countryside is a good second picture.

Sewer: dark industrial style, graffiti wall is the signature spot

Sewer is a dark industrial map with dense pipes overhead, red oil barrels on the ground, and graffiti on the walls. Its light is very dark, which is a natural advantage for the hiding party, because the search party does not have a flashlight and relies solely on the naked eye to find flaws. A well-painted body in a dim corner is difficult to spot at a glance. The community estimates that there are about 4 hiding spots, which is not a large number, but the environment itself helps with hiding. It is an advanced map of "painting instead of place": the location selection space is limited, and it will test your color matching skills.

This picture is most famous for its graffiti wall. The wall is already graffitied and colorful. As long as you flatten your body against the wall and paint similar colors and lines, the eyes of the arresting party will easily read you as part of the graffiti and glide directly over. The shadows of red oil barrels and pipelines are also good places to stay.

Practical reminder: It is most taboo to paint too brightly in a dark environment. Even if the color is right, once it is more "luminous" than the surroundings, it will be exposed immediately. Players have reported that they need to pay attention to the glossiness of the body being too strong (the community attributes this to a gloss/roughness slider, but there is no official confirmation that this setting exists). For the search party, the sewer is a difficult picture. It is recommended to scan slowly along the graffiti wall section by section to look for "extra blobs of color". For ideas, see Sewer Guide.

Backrooms: Strong light and less cover, the most difficult one to hide

Backrooms, inspired by the internet urban legend "Backroom", is an office space style map with intense and even lighting. Just the opposite of the sewer, the light here is extremely strong, there are almost no shadows to hide in, and there are few shelters. Therefore, among the five pictures in "MECCHA CHAMELEON", it is recognized as the most difficult one for hiding. The bright environment means that any color errors and gloss deviations will be amplified, and the slightest inaccuracy in color matching will directly show up.

When cover is scarce, the few available camouflage targets are particularly critical:

  • Exit sign (Exit sign): The green exit sign on the wall, imitated with a flat posture, is a classic hiding method in the back room.
  • Bicycle on the wall: The bicycle hanging on the wall has a complex outline that breaks up the human silhouette.
  • Stacked Chairs: Stacks of chairs are a cluttered structure, and squatting among them painted chair colors is one of the few safe spots.
  • Ceiling Lamps: There are occasionally available corners near the top light source.

Additional point: The v1.2.0 version has fixed the bug in the back room that "players will get stuck in the wall". Now the trick method of getting stuck in the wall to gain points is basically unworkable. For novices, the back room is not recommended as a practice picture. First, practice painting and posing in the mansion and indoor countryside, and then challenge this difficult scene.

Penguin Hotel: Newly added in v1.2.0, paying tribute to the developer’s old works

Penguin Hotel (Penguin Hotel / ペンギンホテル) is the fifth map added to the v1.2.0 version on June 13, 2026. It was confirmed by the developer's official announcement and was also reported by Japanese media such as Denfaminicogamer, GameSpark, and AUTOMATON. This picture has a special origin: it is developer LEMORION (レモリオン)'s self-homage to the horror game series "PENGUIN HOTEL" he produced in his early years. It can be regarded as an Easter egg buried for old fans. For developer background, please see About this game.

It needs to be stated truthfully: As of mid-June, the detailed layout, room structure and signature hiding spots of this map have not been officially announced, and the community has not yet formed mature strategy data. What can be confirmed so far is that it does exist, is the fifth picture, and the theme is a Penguin Hotel. Therefore, the following are reasonable expectations based on the theme of "hotel" and the general knowledge of the hide and seek category. They are not official data. Please refer to the layout you see with your own eyes after entering the picture.

Hotel scenes usually represent these types of spaces, which are most likely to be matched in "MECCHA CHAMELEON":

  • Lobby Front Desk: It is open, with furniture in groups, counters, sofas, green plants, and carpets with many color blocks. It is a good place to practice coloring, but the field of view is also wide, and it is easy to be seen at a glance if it is not well hidden.
  • Guest rooms and corridors: Repeated door, bed, bedside table, carpet patterns. Places with many repeated elements are often more difficult to hide because it is difficult for the search party to check them one by one.
  • Common hotel props: suitcases, luggage trolleys, vertical signs, potted plants, picture frames. These flat or regular objects can be imitated by sticking to the wall or crouching posture.

When faced with a new picture for which there is no ready-made strategy, the most stable idea is to return to the general mental method: in the preparation stage, quickly circle around to find the corner with the most visual complexity and the most repeated elements, use a straw to pick the nearest color, first lay the main color and then layer a layer of shadow, and align the posture silhouette with the objects next to it. This style of play is common to all 5 pictures. For specific techniques, see Hiding and Disguise Techniques.

Custom and MOD maps: more possibilities beyond 5

In addition to the 5 official maps, "MECCHA CHAMELEON" can actually play more scenes, because the developer came with a set of mapping MOD tools at the launch, and players can build and load custom maps by themselves. Version iterations are also paving the way for this mechanism: v1.1.0 allows custom maps to turn off sky light by default (to avoid strong light affecting camouflage), v1.2.0 implements "mods can be accessed without rebuilding the server", and the loading experience is smoother. This means that the playable environment will exceed the official 5 images.

A line must be drawn here: The developer's own mapping tool is confirmed to exist, but many guide sites on the Internet claim that this game "supports Steam Workshop (Workshop) one-click subscription integration". This has never been mentioned in the official patch notes. It is currently an unconfirmed statement circulated in the community and should not be treated as an official feature. In other words, "you can use tools to make your own maps" is true, but "one-click subscription to the creative workshop" has no official basis. Just be cautious when encountering such propaganda.

Finally, I would like to explain a question that newcomers are often confused about: Why do the number of maps listed on different guide sites not match? Some say five, and some say seven or eight? The fundamental reason is that the Steam store page itself does not list any map names. The common Chinese names are now translated from English media reports. Therefore, some sites treat the kitchen, gallery, and party room in the mansion as independent levels and count them repeatedly, and some also include custom MOD maps. Just remember that there are 5 official scenes, plus player-made pictures, and you’ll have a good idea. When it comes to granular numbers such as the precise number of hidden points, just treat them according to community estimates. For the underlying gameplay mechanism, you can refer to the more reliable Gameplay System page.

FAQ

How many maps does MECCHA CHAMELEON have now?
As of June 2026, there are 5 official maps: the first Hide and Seek Mansion, Indoor Village, Sewers, Backrooms, and the new Penguin Hotel in v1.2.0. Note that the Steam store page does not list map names. These Chinese names are derived from media translations and are common names in the community. In addition, the developer comes with its own mapping tools, and players can also play self-made MOD maps.
Which map is the best for novices and the best to hide in?
Hide and seek mansion. It has the most rooms and the most complex layout. According to media and community statistics, it also has the largest number of hiding spots (about 11, the official has not announced the exact number), and it is very tolerant of hiding parties. It was easier to hide in the sewer because the light was dark and the search party didn't have a flashlight. The most difficult part is the back room, which has strong light and little cover. It is not recommended for novices to practice.
Are the kitchen and art gallery separate maps?
no. The kitchen is a room in the hide-and-seek mansion, picture frames and paintings are props on the walls of the mansion, and party balloons and the like are props that players imitate. Thinking of them as independent maps is because the early guide mistakenly regarded the rooms and props in the trailer as levels. The real official maps are 5.
What’s so special about Penguin Hotel?
It is the fifth map added in v1.2.0, and it is also the developer's tribute to his old horror game "PENGUIN HOTEL" series. However, as of mid-June, the detailed layout and signature hiding spots of this picture have not been officially announced, and the community has not yet matured it. You can first use general coloring ideas (find the most complicated corners, pick colors nearby, and stack shadows with main colors) to explore.
