MECCHA CHAMELEON (community temporary translation, the official has not registered any Chinese name, original name MECCHA CHAMELEON / めっちゃカメレオン) is an independent multiplayer hide-and-seek disguise party game that suddenly became popular in June 2026. You play as a pure white, soft bipedal chameleon. During the time-limited preparation phase, you use the in-game color palette to paint the entire body with the color of the walls, floors or props, and quietly blend into the scene; the search party must find all the hiders one by one and shoot them before the countdown reaches zero. It is this gameplay that makes it often called "Peek-a-boo that can draw", "Graffiti Hide-and-Seek" or "Artist version of Prop Hunt" by players. This wiki is for Chinese players who are coming into contact with it for the first time, and will guide you from understanding the rules to actually getting started.

By the way, the name is Meccha (meaning "super, very" in Kansai dialect), not Mecha (mecha); "めっちゃカメレオン" is the literal meaning of "MECCHA CHAMELEON", and this is how the Chinese community calls it. Common spellings such as Mecca, Mecha, and Mekka Chameleon actually refer to the same game.

Quick navigation

What game is this? Understand MECCHA CHAMELEON in one sentence

MECCHA CHAMELEON is a purely online multiplayer hide-and-seek game. Players in each game are divided into two sides: the hiding side with the larger number of people controls a pure white bipedal chameleon; and the searching side (called "Ghost / Oni" in the game) who is responsible for catching people. It belongs to the category of Prop Hunt. If you have never heard of this term, it can be simply understood as: a group of people disguise themselves as objects in the scene and hide, and other people are responsible for finding them.

The most special thing about it is that it turns "disguise" into a real painting. There is a preparation phase at the beginning of each game. The searching party is locked up first, and the hiding party can move around freely, choose a hiding place, and pose, and then open the color palette to color themselves, trying to match the color and texture of the walls, floor tiles, picture frames, or props around them. As soon as the preparation phase is over, the search party is released, scanning the entire field from the first person perspective, looking for flaws with the naked eye, and shooting whoever is found to eliminate them. When the timer reaches zero, as long as there is still one hiding person alive, the hiding party wins.

The funniest part of each game is on the settlement screen: the game will reveal the hiding locations of all hiders one by one. You will often see someone sticking to the ceiling lamp, shrinking into a balloon, or painting themselves into a picture on the wall. It should be noted that the specific number of seconds for each of the preparation phase and the search phase has not been officially announced yet, and it is likely to change depending on the mode and the homeowner's settings. If you want to understand the complete rhythm of a round and the details of each system, you can first read the Gameplay System.

Why did it sell 2 million copies in 5 days?

The speed of this game’s popularity is quite rare in the independent circle in 2026. According to reports from multiple media and third-party data stations, its sales soared in just a few days after its release, and social platforms and live broadcast rooms were almost flooded with it. The following set of numbers is the best way to intuitively feel its popularity, but let’s put the ugly words first: They all come from media reports and community data tracking (such as third-party statistics such as SteamDB), and are not official financial reports released by developers. Just look at the magnitude and trend, and do not need to treat it as accurate data.

Time/milestonesReported data
On sale for about 1 day (6/11)Cumulative sales exceeded 250,000
6/12Cumulative sales exceeded 50 10,000
6/14Cumulative sales exceeded 1 million
6/15 to 6/16Cumulative sales exceeded 2 million, reached in about 5 days
Steam's highest simultaneous online sales in historyApprox. 132,154 people (recorded on 6/15)
Twitch peak audience on launch dayAbout 127,000 people watched at the same time
Steam sales rankingsTopping Japan and South Korea, ranking second globally, second only to CS2

The story behind it is also interesting. It was developed by Japanese independent developer lemorion_1224 (LEMORION / レモリオン). One person integrates development and distribution. After its release, he has been releasing patches to fix problems and add content almost every day. Wiki also lists HAGANEIRO (はがねいろ) as a co-creator, indicating that at least two people are participating in maintenance (this is recorded by the community and Wiki, not an official signature). The "Penguin Hotel" map added in v1.2.0 is a self-homage from the developer to his early horror game series "PENGUIN HOTEL".

From a category perspective, it is classified into the friendslop (friends carnival/plastic friendship) line that has been very popular in recent years, with "Lethal Company" and "R.E.P.O." having passed before it. What these games have in common is that they have simple rules and a lot of embarrassing moments. They are particularly suitable for a group of friends to cheat and cheat. They are also naturally suitable for anchors to open "audience participation games", so they rely on live broadcasts and short videos to spread virally. PC Gamer commented that it "has the potential to become a giant in this category." To start with friends or an audience, see Connect and Multiplayer.

Three things that determine victory or defeat: hiding spots, posture, and painting skills

The official store page summarizes the essence of the game in one sentence: victory or defeat depends on the hiding spot, the pose, and most importantly, your artistic skills. These three things are all that the hiding party needs to practice, and one of them is indispensable.

  • Position: Choose where to hide. The more visually cluttered the area and the more objects there are, the better it is to hide. A pile of clutter in the middle of the room is often better to hide than an empty corner. Because the search partyhad no flashlight, the light was also strong in dark shadowed corners.
  • Pose: Take a pose that breaks the outline of the human form. The ones that have been confirmed so far include curling up into a ball, squatting, lying flat, and pressing against the wall. The key is that the silhouette should resemble the object next to it, such as curling up into a ball to match a balloon, and flattening it to match a hanging painting or exit sign. As for the number of poses in total, the official has not yet announced it. It is known that v1.2.0 has added 2 more poses.
  • Painting: This is the core that connects the first two steps. Use the palette and eyedropper tools to paint the body to match the surrounding colors and textures. Whether you apply it well or not directly determines whether the search party will stay on you for a few tenths of a second when they sweep over.

It should be emphasized that the goal of the hiding party is not to become completely invisible, but to allow the searching party to spend long enough to "prove that you are a player and not a real item" and thus be overwhelmed by the timer. In other words, you are stalling for time. For the complete practical process of the three elements, please see Hiding and Disguise Techniques.

How is it different from classic Prop Hunt?

Many old players will directly regard it as another Prop Hunt, but it has made a fundamental change, which is the core reason why it is popular.

In classic Prop Hunt games like "Garry's Mod", you press a button and your entire body becomes a preset prop, such as a box, a chair, or a watermelon. The model is ready-made, and the same prop looks the same when everyone conjures it up.

In MECCHA CHAMELEON, you always keep the humanoid body of a chameleon and will not transform into anything else. What you can do is color and pose freely on this body. This has two direct consequences:

  • Each disguise is unique, depending on your drawing skills, color matching and posture at the time. No two hiders will be exactly the same.
  • The quality of disguise has changed from "luck on which prop to draw" to "How similar your drawing is", so it has changed from a reaction game to a semi-creative game, with masterpieces and overturns coexisting, which is particularly photogenic.

For players who switch from Prop Hunt, the biggest mental change is: stop thinking "I want to become that box" and think "I want topaint myself into a part of that wall." This is the one that allows it to repeatedly create famous scenes in the live broadcast room.

Beginners can get started in 3 minutes: moving, coloring, posing, stilling

Don’t panic when entering the game for the first time. The basic cycle of hiding is just four steps. Just follow these steps in the preparation phase:

  1. Move and select points: Move quickly at the beginning of the preparation phase and decide where to hide as soon as possible. It is recommended to lock in the first third of the preparation phase and leave the rest of the time for painting.
  2. Posing: Posing first and then coloring, this order is more convenient. Pick a pose where your silhouette is closest to the object next to you, such as curling up into a ball to hold a balloon.
  3. Coloring: Open the color palette, first use the Eyedropper tool (called スポイト / Spoid in the game) to absorb a basic main color from the wall or props next to it, and spread it over a large area; then absorb a darker shadow color and stack it on top, and finally add some texture lines. RememberDon’t just use one solid color for flat painting, as that is the easiest way to see through at a glance.
  4. Still: After the search phase begins, motionless. Any extra movement will give you away immediately, no matter how perfectly the colors are painted.

A reminder: Most of the specific default key positions circulated on the Internet (such as coloring a certain key, posing a certain key) come from community fan sites and are copied from each other. The official key table has never been announced. Please refer to your own in-game settings menu and screen prompts for everything. The gameplay idea of the Seeker is completely opposite, see The Seeker Guide.
